AT&T 4G LTE Network Expands In Greater Charlotte Areas
AT&T has expanded its 4G LTE network in the greater Charlotte area, bringing more customers the latest generation of wireless network technology. AT&T first launched 4G LTE in Charlotte in November 2011, and the expanded coverage is part of its ongoing rollout across the market.
AT&T 4G LTE coverage now includes Gastonia; western portions of Lake Norman, including the town of Denver; along N.C. Hwy. 3 from Kannapolis to Mooresville; along U.S. Hwy. 52 from China Grove to Mooresville; south of Salisbury to the Granite Quarry area; and along U.S. Hwy. 601 between Concord and Monroe.
AT&T 4G LTE provides several benefits, including:
Faster speeds. LTE technology is capable of delivering speeds faster than many other mobile Internet technologies. Customers can stream, download, upload and game faster than ever before.
Cool new devices. AT&T offers several LTE-compatible devices, including new AT&T 4G LTE smartphones and tablets, such as the HTC One(TM) X, Samsung Focus® 2, Nokia Lumia 900, Samsung Galaxy Note(TM), and Pantech Element(TM) tablet.
Faster response time. LTE technology offers lower latency, or the processing time it takes to move data through a network, such as how long it takes to start downloading a webpage or file once you’ve sent the request. Lower latency helps to improve services like mobile gaming, two-way video calling and telemedicine.
More efficient use of spectrum. Wireless spectrum is a finite resource, and LTE uses spectrum more efficiently than other technologies, creating more space to carry data traffic and services and to deliver a better network experience.
“We’ve seen positive response from customers on our 4G LTE launch, and as today’s expansion shows, we’re continuing our rollout of fast LTE speeds to more areas of Charlotte,” said Laurent Therivel, AT&T’s VP/GM of Mobility and Consumer Markets in the Carolinas. “This expansion also further enhances the world-class wireless and wireline service we’ll provide during the Democratic National Convention in September.”
AT&T has been named the official wireline and mobility service provider for the Democratic National Convention, Sept. 4-6 in Charlotte.
As part of the drive to deliver the nation’s best mobile-Internet experience, AT&T made more than 400 network upgrades in the Charlotte area in 2011, including: the launch of 4G LTE service (the fastest available mobile Internet technology) and 4G LTE Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) to improve mobile coverage and capacity for consumers in Charlotte; the deployment of as many as 10 temporary cell sites, including the first ever DAS on wheels (DOW) at the pro basketball arena; the implementation of 12 outdoor DAS to improve street-level mobility; the launch of a Wi-Fi Hot Zone with coverage along S. Brevard Street; the installation of 12 new cell sites; and the addition of 180 “carriers,” or layers of frequency, to cell sites to increase capacity and reduce dropped calls.
AT&T has an extensive history of investing in North Carolina, and from 2008 to 2011 AT&T spent more than $1.8 billion to upgrade the wireless and wireline networks North Carolina. This includes investing nearly $625 million in Charlotte-area networks over the same time period.
