Bobcats, Jordan Host 2nd Annual Cats Care Day of Service

BSE Partners with SportSouth, Second Harvest Food Bank to Give Back

Bobcats Sports & Entertainment (BSE) and FOX Sports’ regional network SportSouth partnered on Monday to help fight hunger with an entire day of service dedicated to providing meals to under served children, adults and families throughout the Charlotte community.

The Bobcats planned the day as the formal kickoff of Cats Care, a charity program that has operated behind the scenes for months. It represents a push by the team to increase its charitable impact through focusing on three specific areas of need: education, wellness and the fight against hunger.

“This is a reiteration of what my whole commitment has been to the Carolinas community,” said Jordan. “When I took over the team, I wanted to reconnect with the community and a great organization – Second Harvest – came to us and asked us to help play a big role in what they do.

The highlighted element of the Second Annual Cats Care Day of Service was the unveiling of a 26-foot, 14,000-pound refrigerated mobile pantry with logos representing the Bobcats, SportSouth and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, which was funded by a $250,000 cash donation. This vehicle will serve as a transport unit for over 100,000 pounds of pre-packaged food items and canned goods.

Kay Carter of Second Harvest Food Bank accepted the $250,000 check at the arena. Half the money is for food and the other half for a refrigerated truck that will serve as a mobile pantry, she said.

Carter cried a little during the presentation, noting the truck will allow her to feed an additional 100,000 people each year, many of whom live in surrounding rural areas. “If that doesn’t make you emotional, then there is something wrong,” she said.

It’s estimated the team provided more than 6,000 people with food at afternoon events, including hundreds of families who lined up at Time Warner Cable Arena.
