Carolina Panthers New Head Coach Ron Rivera

Carolina Panthers New Head Coach Ron Rivera

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson introduces Ron Rivera as the team's new head coach.

Former San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera was formally announced as the Carolina Panthers new head football coach on Tuesday afternoon (Jan 11th).

Rivera replaces John Fox, who in nine seasons as head coach went 78-74 (including playoffs and one Super Bowl appearance) but never posted consecutive winning seasons. The Panthers went 2-14 this season and did not renew Fox’s contract. This past season Rivera elevated the Chargers to the top defense in the league, allowing just 271.6 yards per game.

ESPN reported Rivera received a four-year, $11.2 million deal to become the fourth head coach in franchise’s 16-year history. Despite running a 3-4 defense in San Diego, Rivera said the Panthers will continue to use a 4-3 based on their personnel.
