Charlotte Area Student Wins Super Bowl Honor

February 6, 2012

James Gale, a fifth-grader at Weddington Elementary, was chosen as the NFL Play 60 Super Kid and presented the official football to the referee on the 50-yard line before the kickoff at this year’s Super Bowl.

He also got his 30 seconds of fame during halftime as Bob Costas introduced him to the NBC television audience.

More than 10,000 fans, ages 6-13, entered the annual nationwide contest, which required entrants to answer essay questions related to health, nutrition and fitness and to pledge to be active for 60 minutes a day. His essay about nutrition, included how his diet improved after being adopted by an American family and moving here from Liberia.

Gale won the contest as the NFL Play 60 Super Kid, winning the job of presenting the official game ball before Sunday’s kickoff. Thirty-three youths won at the local level, receiving prize packs with two tickets to a regular-season game in their market, but James was the sole national winner.
