Each year, Hands On Charlotte honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by organizing multiple service projects for hundreds of volunteers on and around the holiday that bears his name.

These projects not only deliver valuable assistance to nonprofit organizations, schools and other service providers around the area, but also allow participants to kick off the New Year by reflecting on the meaning of Dr. King’s life of service for today’s America.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Parade
Saturday, January 17, 2015 | 11am – 12:30pm
The parade, which starts Uptown Charlotte at 9th and Tryon and ends at the MLK Blvd, features over 80 local and regional organizations. Approximately 4,000 individuals participate in the parade.

Participants include high school marching bands, steppers, Greek letter fraternities and sororities, social and community service organizations as well as city and county elected officials, and religious and community leaders.

MLK Growing the Dream Ceremony

A luncheon held to honor community members who work to foster unity and promote diversity and multiculturalism in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. The event is free to attend and space is limited.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Worship Celebration
This service is designed to examine and celebrate the global impact of Dr. King as a moral leader. This celebration also recognizes the MLK Keeper of the Dream award winners and features music, poems and speakers. Free admission. Jan. 18, 5 p.m. CPCC’s Halton Theater, 1201 Elizabeth Ave.

For two days, Levine Museum of the New South is honoring Dr. King’s life, legacy and the pursuit of civil and human rights through a series of films, performances, children’s activities and exhibits. The program’s theme is “Universal Brotherhood” and will feature a variety of leaders in the community. Free admission. Jan. 18, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Jan. 19, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This celebration recognizes the national holiday with music, student essays, poems and recognition of the annual MLK Medallion Award winners.

CMS students in the annual CMS MLK, Jr. Art and Writing Contest are presented with award checks. Former NAACP President Ben Jealous is the Keynote Speaker.

3rd Annual MLK Teen Summit
Monday, January 19, 2015 | 11am – 1pm
This event is open and free to all the teens and youth in our community and will engage them in discussion around social justice, higher education, entrepreneurship and civic engagement. This will be a time for giving and reflection, and will include a poetry slam, volunteer fair, a message from Former President and CEO of the NAACP, Ben Jealous and more.

The purpose of this event is to help us to regain hope and inspire our youth to dream big and develop a positive outlook. We would like for you to help us make this event a success and to show our youth that we, as adults, have not given up on them.
