Friday, January 15th

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Service
Friday, January 15, 2016 | 12pm – 1pm
This event, which occurs on the actual birth date of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., commemorates the life and death of Dr. King. The br​ief service includes a wreath-laying ceremony.

Saturday, January 16th

Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Parade
Saturday, January 16, 2016 | Starts at 10:30am
The parade will march down Tryon Street, beginning at N. Tryon and 10th ​Street and ending at Stonewall Street. More than 100 community organizations, marching bands and step and drill teams will participate. Highlights will include floats with the student winners of the CMS MLK art and writing contests and local performance groups.

MLK Growing the Dream Award Luncheon

The annual MLK Growing the Dream event is designed to recognize the unsung heroes of our community. Service is the very purpose of life. It is the rent we pay for living and these are the grassroots citizens in every community that seek to serve and not be seen. These heroes are the cafeteria workers, single parents, children and family advocates, social workers, bus drivers and servant leaders. The committee is proud to recognize these individuals as we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

We commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., social activist and winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, each year at the Annual MLK Holiday Breakfast established by the H.L. McCrorey Family YMCA. We are pleased to announce the 2016 Keynote Speaker is Malcolm Graham, Former State Senator. Tickets are $45 and available online. Tickets sales benefit the McCrorey Family YMCA.

Living the Legacy: MLK Day

Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools are closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Day. If you’re lucky enough to have a day off work too, take the kids to the Gantt Center for a full program of discussion, performance, workshops and film. There will be activities for adults and families.

Past, Present and Future: Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Tuesday, January 19th | Time: 3:30pm
The theme for the 2016 MLK Celebration is Advancing the Dream: A Call to Action. The program will feature keynote speaker Ed Gordon, recognition of campus partners, and a candle lighting ceremony. There will be a community reception immediately following the program in the Lucas Room. Free and open to the public.
