Expansion Plan For Charlotte’s Gold Line Streetcar Service

Expansion Plan For Charlotte’s Gold Line Streetcar Service

Wednesday, November 11, 2015

As the second phase of the CityLynx Gold Line streetcar service gets underway, Charlotte Area Transit System officials are meeting neighbors in east and west Charlotte with public meetings to discuss the project’s progress.

A meeting was held Tuesday at Johnson C. Smith University. Another will be held on Thursday, November 12th from 6–7:30 p.m. at Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church, Evans Hall, 501 Hawthorne Lane.

A public meeting on Thursday is scheduled to present updates on a proposed $150 million, 2.5-mile extension of Charlotte’s much-debated CityLynx Gold Line streetcar service.

Phase 2 would add 11 stops and extend streetcar service by two miles going west, from Charlotte Transportation Center in uptown to French Street, north of Johnston C. Smith University.

Service to the east would be extended by 0.5 mile along Hawthorne Lane, from Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center to Sunnyside Avenue, near Central and Louise avenues.

Charlotte’s streetcar continues to have more riders than CATS anticipated. The Gold Line handled 1,682 passenger trips on weekdays in August. In September, it averaged 1,938 trips.

Before it opened in July, CATS estimated the streetcar would carry about 1,000 passengers on weekdays.

Gold Line Overview

The CityLYNX Gold Line is a 10-mile streetcar system that is an integral part of the 2030 Transit Plan and is being constructed in phases. The alignment will connect through the central business district and serves as a critical economic development tool to focus growth along key corridors, connecting neighborhoods to community interests such as businesses, employment, entertainment, educational institutions, healthcare, etc.

The CityLYNX Gold Line also serves as a critical connection for the efficient and robust operation of the overall transit system, linking together all the current and future rapid transit lines:

Blue Line,
Red Line – North Corridor
Silver Line – Southeast Corridor
West Corridor – Airport

and linking four of CATS current and future transit centers.
