USA Olympic Team Filled With Charlotte Area Swimmers

More swimmer’s with Charlotte ties, are headed to this summer’s Olympic games in London.

A 5th SwimMAC Carolina team member, Kara Lynn Joyce, grabbed a ticket Monday night by finishing 2nd in the 50-freestyle event, at Olympic trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

SwimMAC trains in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Earlier Monday, Michael Phelps announced he will drop out of the 200-freestyle event, because he’d like to focus more of his time on relays.

This has a big impact on Charlotte swimmers. With Phelps out, South Mecklenburg High School graduate Ricky Berens, is in. Berens will race the individual 200-free event for Phelps. SwimMAC Carolina’s Davis Tarwater (originally from Knoxville, TN) will replace Phelps in the 4×200 relay.

SwimMAC’s Cullen Jones (50 free, 100 free, 4×100 free relay), Nick Thoman (100 back), and Micah Lawrence (200 breast); earned their spots earlier this week.

Fans may attend an open practice on Thursday, July 5 from 12:00pm – 1:30 pm at the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center.
