Charlotte Douglas airport set an all-time record for passengers in 2014. Leaders are now studying how to keep up with that growth.
The airport said Thursday that it set a new passenger record in 2014, with more than 44.3 million travelers.
The vast majority of those travelers were on American Airlines, which merged with US Airways in 2013 and operates more than 90 percent of the flights in Charlotte.
For the past year, a research firm, the FAA and airport officials have been studying how the airport should grow through 2035.
If that growth continues, early results from the study call for building a fourth parallel runway and almost doubling the number of gates from 93 to 164.
