Hands On Charlotte’s MLK Week of Service January 14-21, 2012
Each year, Hands On Charlotte honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by organizing dozens of volunteer service projects on and around the holiday that bears his name. These projects not only deliver valuable assistance to nonprofit organizations, schools and other service providers around the area, but also allow thousands of citizens to reflect on the meaning of Dr. King’s life of service for today’s America. The event includes Volunteer Projects, the MLK Service Forum, and Sunday Suppers.

Martin Luther King Legacy Concert with Micah Stampley & Blanche McAllister-Dykes
This moving tribute of narration, music, and dance reflects on Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement of America in the 60’s that sparked a nationwide spirit of reflection and change. The evening’s guest include Stellar Award Winning Singer, Songwriter and Producer Micah Stampley, Blanche McAllister-Dykes and others. The exceptional Legacy Concert Choir is conducted by William Cummings II

18th Annual Martin Luther King Jr Prayer Breakfast
Each year this event celebrates and reflects upon Dr. King’s commanding tenets of the American Dream – Freedom, Democracy and Opportunity for All. The breakfast provides guests a tangible opportunity to support Dr. King’s dream for equality as the proceeds from the event are channeled directly into the McCrorey service area to help fulfill YMCA program and membership needs for all, regardless of economic status.

MLK Day 2012 – Finding Harmony in Difference
The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture celebrates the legacy of Dr. King by providing engaging and exciting workshops, films and presentations that support tolerance and respect in our communities. Tolerance can be viewed as a way of thinking and feeling that respects individuality. It is only through acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world’s cultures and forms of expression that we can begin to recognize harmony in difference.

Sierra Club Martin Luther King Day of Service Project
As part of our Resilient Habitat Program we’ll be doing maintenance on trees along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway in Belmont, part of Charlotte’s ecodistrict. Please bring a water bottle, work gloves, and wear closed toe shoes and appropriate clothing to be doing work outside in January. Creek ReLeaf will be providing project direction and tools. REI will provide water and snacks.
