The 1996 Pulitzer-prize winning Broadway musical Rent is based loosely on Puccini’s opera La Bohème. It follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the Bohemian lifestyle in New York’s East Village. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, Angel, Maureen, Benjamin and Mark. Winner of the 1996 Tony Award, Rent is credited with bringing a new generation to musical theatre. The reality of the story and the quality of the show’s rock tunes are as powerful a combination now as they were when the show first appeared on Broadway. Presented By: Theatre Charlotte
