Cam Newton will make the final tune-up for what could be the rookie quarterback’s first official NFL start when the 2011 No. 1 overall draft pick’s Carolina Panthers welcome the defending AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers into Bank of America Stadium for Thursday’s preseason clash.

Though Panthers head coach Ron Rivera has yet to disclose who will be under center for the team’s Week 1 regular-season contest at Arizona on Sept. 11, all indications are that Newton is ahead of second-year man Jimmy Clausen in the race. The 2010 Heisman Trophy winner has started Carolina’s last two preseason tests and will do so again on Thursday, and has received substantially more reps than Clausen through the first three games.

For Pittsburgh, the focus is already on its season-opening grudge match at AFC North rival Baltimore on Sept. 11. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is one of several Steeler notables that won’t take part in the preseason finale, a list that may also include All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu, linebacker James Farrior, center Maurkice Pouncey and cornerbacks Ike Taylor and Bryant McFadden.
