47th Festival In The Park

Since 1964, Festival in the Park has been bringing good music, good art and good times to Charlotteans and visitors from around the world. The sounds of “big band music” drift across Freedom Park’s lake whose still surface reflects the lights strung from Camelot exhibit tents.

Entering Freedom Park from Princeton Avenue, Festival-goers encounter the Anne Reynolds Belk Artists’ Walk, this year featuring over 60 exhibitors of fine arts and crafts. Then while strolling along the Lake Walk, patrons can peruse the wares of traditional arts and crafts purveyors. A variety of savory food offerings and interactive children’s’ activities, along with the continuous soundtrack provided by some of the area’s finest musicians, round out the Festival’s sensory feast.

This year’s Main Stage offerings spotlight the jazz folk of the Lizzy Ross Band on Friday evening. Saturday’s lineup includes blues artist Donna Duncan, the classic rock of Crisis, and perennial Festival favorites The Spongetones. The Brubackers’ contemporary jazz, Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Celtic-world-folk of Gael Warning cap off the event Sunday.

Children are enchanted by the ongoing shows at the Carolina Clowns Stage and the Magicians Stage. Local youth between the ages of 5-18 even have a chance to showcase their talent on the Youth Talent Stage.

The Charlotte Folk Society Stage will present old-time, bluegrass, Celtic, singer/songwriters, drumming groups, storytellers, and contemporary folk.

The performing venue this year will be the engaging Theatre Stage. Dozens of different acts have been scheduled to perform; offering vaudeville, puppetry, storytelling, mime, comedy, spoken poetry and musical excerpts.

In its second year, the Jazz Arts Stage will feature professional and amateur performers from the region. The stage will showcase a variety of jazz genres and reflect the diversity and history of the music.

Nearly a thousand entertainers provide free ongoing performances at the main band shell and many stages surrounding it.

Festival in the Park was selected as one of Southeast Tourism Society’s Top
20 Events for the month of September 2011! In past years, Festival in the Park has also been chosen as one of Sunshine Artists Magazine’s 200 BEST festivals.

Historically, Festival in the Park visitors typically exceed 100,000 visitors each year.

The Festival is made possible by many groups and individuals. A sampling of the organizations who actively participate in bringing art and entertainment to the Festival are Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, Carolina Raptor Center, the Carolina Clowns, the Magicians’ Stage, the Charlotte Folk Society, the Actors Crib and the Jazz Arts Initiative. We welcome them and the many others who help make the Festival possible.

We encourage all groups and individuals to participate and get involved with Festival in the Park!!
